Early memories in music

This is my second blog on my home page. Even though I went “Live” a few days ago.  I am still trying to find my way around WordPress. I’ve just found out how to add links and no doubt in the future you will be seeing many changes to this site. Your probably asking What’s this got to do with Music ?

Music is a skill which takes years of practice and patience. As we grow up from being a young child we learn many skills which stay with us for life. For example taking our first steps to forming relationships with other people. This also goes for musicians who spend many hours learning there instruments. I remember as a young child learning the piano. I didn’t know I could play the piano I just did it. My headteacher at primary school was very musical and played the piano a bit.We didn’t have a musical family from what I knew. That was until I was about 12 years old. I began to find out where my musical skill could have come from. Both my Grandparents were very much into music. My Grandfarther on my Dad’s side could play the piano a bit. He wasn’t classically trained but he sure could belt out a tune on the piano. My other Grandfarther was also into music. He used to have a very big collection of classical music. He had anything from Mozart to Rachmaninoff. He would play this music all the time when ever I used to visit. By the time I was 12 years old I knew many of the standard classics. My farther used to play classical music to me as well. I think they were trying to tell me something ?

Could I read music ? Not at all. But I do remember my first public performance. It was for a school production of “Snow White” I was 6 years old and became a big celebrity in my school. I even had pictures in the local press. I played most of the songs from Snow White by ear. I had never seen the film as a child so wasn’t that familiar with the story. I was just told to play and I did. At the time I didn’t realize I had a talent and bushed it of. I thought to my self what’s all the fuss about?

This is where I began my journey as a musician and learning how to play. I picked up the basics very easy. I was made to practice everyday for half an hour. Looking back I though as a young child what I am I doing this for? Now I know. Thanks Mum.

So no matter your age learning a musical instrument is a skill for life.
